OUR FOUNDER

About SYD PATTEN

Falmouth resident, Sydney Patten began studying piano at the age of six to please her mother. She very quickly fell in love the with the instrument and with all kinds of music. She studied music and piano at Skidmore College and began composing (secretly) while she was there. Not long after graduation, she moved to Gloucester, Massachusetts and spent a lot of time at Crane’s Beach in Ipswich where was inspired to write ‘Waltz of the Piping Plover.’ She became Vice President of the American Women Composers and continued to write music based on her love of nature, the ocean and wildlife.Moving to Maine in 2009, she continued to write music. While living right next to Acadia National Park, she was inspired both by write music about seals, jellyfish, great white sharks and the Somes Sound.
In addition to being a musician, Sydney is a very active member of Citizens Climate Lobby and the Foundation for Climate Restoration. She has created a list of 60 things people can do - both large scale and small scale, to mitigate their carbon footprint. (See the QR code below.)
Sydney has combined her passion for music and for nature in Concerts for Climate. Can music really fight climate change? She believes that at a certain point, we become inured to the news about what’s happening to our planet and to the devastating consequences to our oceans, wildlife and to us. We become unable to initiate change. However, music touches the soul and makes us more receptive to making appropriate and meaningful choices about our behavior.

OUR MISSION

Concerts for Climate helps non-profits raise money. Whether you are a bird sanctuary, political action group group, a conservancy etc., if your not-profit's mission is dedicated to reducing CO2 from the atmosphere, or if it is dedicated to protecting forest, flora, fauna and the ocean and its creatures, we want to help you help our magnificent planet! How do we accomplish this? With music! And information! Sydney is a classically trained pianist and composer. Her inspirations are found in nature: piping plovers, seals, jellyfish, forests, eagles and more..........Attendees leave the performance armed not only with inspiration, but with knowledge in the form of a LIST which she has compiled with 60 things one can do to help mitigate one's carbon footprint.Teaming up with a non-profit, we ask only two things of them:1.) to provide us with a speaker from their organization and
2.) to send out invitations
Sydney believes that, at a certain point, we become inured to the sad and even terrifying truths about our changing climate. This can result in inertia. But when you touch people's hearts, what better way to do that than with music, then you have a much better chance of affecting their behavior.WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING
"Sydney's passion and commitment as a climate activist, her deep curiosity about wildlife and her stellar skills as a musician all come together in the events that she hosts. Her clear explanation of her work, along with gifted storytelling, inspires the audience to actively listen to every note. Her compositions are complex and beautiful. To fully take them in and appreciate them, I often realized that my eyes were closed, so that I fully draw them into my soul."
Andrew Beam, Executive Director of the Maine Audubon, Falmouth
“The Concert for Climate was a huge success, transcending my fears and tender hope for our planet well beyond what I could imagine. At the outset I was visually enfolded with both the precious beauty and tragedy of nature now at its most vulnerable, needing our care, my care, at this precarious time. And with its power to move us like nothing else, incredibly rich and beautiful music came to lift and enlighten me in my deepest core, reminding all of us in the audience of our love of this natural world which we all ached to be whole. Like the gorgeous, evocative piano of Sydney Patten, immersing us in the ocean world of the jellyfish—just loved it!”
Jaqueline Clark, attendee at the Concert for Climate in October 2024

Putting pressure on our politicians to do the right thing is probably the most impactful thing we can do to have a positive impact: citizensclimatelobby.org3.) Electric cars like the Chevy Bolt and the Kia are surprisingly affordable - and think of all the money you’ll save on gas as prices for gas and oil rise!!4.) Ditch your two stroke engine leaf blower!! Go electric. A gas powered leaf blower emits as much CO2 in a half hour as a Ford Raptor pick-up truck going 3000 miles!!!Use the QR below for other tips and tricks!
