OUR FOUNDER
About SYD PATTEN

Falmouth resident, Sydney Patten, is passionate about climate and about music. She recently stepped down from her role as president of the Portland Rossini Club so that she could devote more time to music, especially composition. She currently has four ocean-themed piano compositions and a fifth, on jellyfish, will be ready soon.Sydney began studying piano at the age of 6 to please her mother. She very quickly fell in love with the instrument and with classical music…At Skidmore College, she studied music with a concentration in piano performance. While living on the North Shore of Massachusetts, she began composing music inspired by birds at Crane’s Beach and also inspired by classical pieces the was studying. During that time, she served as the Vice President of the American Women Composers.Because of her interest in the ocean, nature and climate, her inspirations for composition continue to be wildlife, the ocean and sea creatures in Maine. Some of her favorite subjects have been piping plovers, eagles, seals, seaweed, jellyfish and great white sharks…….. She believes that the best way to get people to initiate change, is to inspire them and what better way to do that than with music?Sydney is a climate activist and lobbyist and understands that ceasing to emit CO2 is only half the story. In order to keep planet earth sustainable for us and most other forms of life, we need to also draw down the legacy of CO2 in our atmosphere which has been spewing upward since the late 1700s. In spite of the dire situation with climate, she has found hope, particularly after recently having read Peter Fiekowsky’s book, “Climate Restoration.” This book outlines 3 ways to draw CO2 out of the earth’s atmosphere. She hopes that some of the hope she feels is evident in her music. She is also on the Town of Falmouth’s Sustainability Committee. In addition to sharing her music, she will also be sharing with you, ’The LIST’ in which you will find 60+ things you can do to help mitigate climate change. Taking action is often the best way to ‘mitigate’ your own fear and depression over climate change. Some of these things are ‘free and easy’ such as putting on a sweater instead of turning up the thermostat. Others require bigger moves but not necessarily more money like installing solar panels or driving an electric car. There’s so much we can do, and the outcome is not certain at this point. But if we work together and remain hopeful, we can make a difference.Sydney has several pieces on Spotify and her newest album is called ‘Norumbega Sunrise.’ She and her husband Bill live in Falmouth. They have five grown children and a dog named Patapouf.
Making a Difference
OUR MISSION

Concerts for Climate mission is to educate and inspire people to take action to ameliorate the rapidly increasing effects of climate change. And one of the most impactful things everyone can do is to put pressure on our politicians to pass legislation which will make a difference.Working with all different types of musicians, our mission is to inspire and educate, bringing people’s attention to Citizens Climate Lobby / Citizens Climate Education, two organizations which support ordinary people in ways that make it easy let our elected officials know how we feel about the climate crisis, and what we the people want for effective climate legislation. With inspiring music and targeted messages, we intend to expand the network of actively-engaged citizens who are showing themselves and others that what we do makes a difference.WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING
“The Concert for Climate was a huge success, transcending my fears and tender hope for our planet well beyond what I could imagine. At the outset I was visually enfolded with both the precious beauty and tragedy of nature now at its most vulnerable, needing our care, my care, at this precarious time. And with its power to move us like nothing else, incredibly rich and beautiful music came to lift and enlighten me in my deepest core, reminding all of us in the audience of our love of this natural world which we all ached to be whole. Like the gorgeous, evocative piano of Sydney Patten, immersing us in the ocean world of the jellyfish—just loved it!”

MAKE A DIFFERENCE
USING THE LIST
There are many ways to positively impact the environment with small changes in our daily lives. Please see some examples below on how you can be a active member in the changing our planet!1:) Use Ecosia as your search engine. Ecosia plants trees for every 40 searches you do on the internet2:) Join CITIZENS CLIMATE LOBBY! Putting pressure on our politicians to do the right thing is probably the most impactful thing we can do to have a positive impact: citizensclimatelobby.org3.) Electric cars like the Chevy Bolt and the Kia are surprisingly affordable - and think of all the money you’ll save on gas as prices for gas and oil rise!!4.) Ditch your two stroke engine leaf blower!! Go electric. A gas powered leaf blower emits as much CO2 in a half hour as a Ford Raptor pick-up truck going 3000 miles!!!5.) Put on a sweater before you turn up the heat
